Coin Collecting: A Great Hobby

People have been collecting coins probably for as long as coins have been produced.  In the not too distant past, however, serious coin collecting was done only by people wealthy enough to afford the hobby.  Today, however, you can get into the hobby of coin collecting without great expense.  At a very basic level, you can even begin the hobby without spending a dime (sorry about that).  I’m not trying to be facetious, but you might find some starter coins under the cushions of old couches or under the back seats of old automobiles.

People get into the hobby of coin collecting for two major reasons, one because they are just interested and fascinated by coins and two, for the more serious collectors, as an investment.  I myself like to think of the stories that go along with the coins I collect.  As a metal detectorist, when I find coins, I try to imagine the stories that might be attached to them.  That’s the fun and fascination part of coin collecting.

The more serious coin collectors are less interested in the stories that go along with the coins as in the value over the years of the coins they collect.  These collectors are interested in coins as investments, much as someone might collect works of art or precious gems. Therefore, they are looking to collect coins made of precious metals, i.e. gold and silver coins.  In addition, error coins, those that are minted improperly, are prized by collectors.  Perhaps the graphic is off center or the die struck the coin more than once in its production.

Perhaps you have in mind collecting coins as an investment that will benefit someone else in the future, perhaps a grandchild.  Maybe that grandchild will also take an interest in the hobby.  In the event that you are purchasing coins for an investment, a good choice would be generic silver eagles. They contain a full ounce of silver and cost only a few dollars more than the going rate for silver. But if you additionally intend for those valuable coins to be a family heirloom, consider purchasing proof types of the same coins.

Coin collecting should be an enjoyable experience.  By all means, collect what you like.  Set a reasonable budget for purchasing the coins you like.  You can start with little, but don’t be afraid to start.  Coin collecting is not only an interesting hobby, but it is also a rewarding one, a hobby that gives back to you.
